RAY'S PLOT

Ray, our very good neighbour, is in the process of moving house, and we all know how traumatic that can be. We have offered to give him a hand with his plot untill as such time he is able to come back to us and take over again.

SEPTEMBER 2001

We have first cleared the plot of all surface weeds, raked and levelled it. (see our Diary for pictures) The beds and borders have been marked out with pegs and string and we are now beginning the task of digging. Some of the plot had been covered with old carpets for about 9 months which has made it easier but other sections are very hard and dry. For the time being, to prevent the re-growth of weeds on the paths we are laying old carpeting. This although unsightly will help in the long run and we hope the local Council will let us have some more wood chippings to lay on the top as and when they become available.
I have started to plant polyanthus and wallflowers in the borders to give a little Spring colour.
The 3 centre beds when dug over will have plenty of manure added in readiness for next years vegetables.

NOVEMBER.

  
  

John has now finished edging all the beds and between us we have completed all the digging on our half and Ray's half (see last picture). I have well mulched Ray's strawberries. The carpets have been laid securely with heavy bricks etc. and should stand the high winds we tend to get in the winter.
DECEMBER.

We are sorry to learn that Ray will not be returning to Elson due to his commitments and the extent of travelling time back to Elson from Lee-on-the-Solent. We did apply to Gosport Council with a request to take over the plot ourselves. Unfortunately they will not agree it and it is with regret we will not be able to continue with this project. I do hope you will still continue to follow our progress through the Diary for 2002.
